This workshop offers a new perspective on the use of stencils for drawing. What if the stencil does not lie statically on the surface, but moves during drawing? The concept of an exact copy is erased, replaced by something else, an individual copy that becomes an irreproducible original.
The movement of the stencil on the sheet is described in the instructions. These instructions challenge “template thinking” through the medium of drawing. It combines methods such as unlearning, rule breaking and co-creation to create something meaningful, new and collectively beautiful.
Intuition: The key aspect of the instructions is the movement of the human hand. It challenges the concept of precision, which is strongly associated with the use of drawing stencils. The methods aim for the opposite: the strict contours of the stencil become only a starting point for the drawing and do not determine the final result.
Collaboration: Some instructions encourage collaborative use of the stencils. For example, one person moves the stencil on the sheet of paper while another draws. This fosters collective action and reaction, encouraging participants to respond to one another in real time.
Expansion of the system: Any stencils can be used with these methods — not only drawing stencils, but also any objects that can function as stencils. This makes the workshop scalable and adaptable to different themes or contexts.
